Hiromi "..attacked the keyboard with a passion that was frenetic and all consuming.." - examiner.com

If you missed Hiromi Uehara's two visits to Mosaic in 2006, here's your chance to experience her dynamic, high-energy live performance!

Pianist-composer Hiromi returns to the Esplanade Concert Hall with The Trio Project, which sees her performing alongside pioneering six-string electric bassist Anthony Jackson and renowned and respected drummer Steve Smith. This promises to be a night of dazzling jazz musicianship and improvisation.

An infectious personality who’s prodigiously talented, Hiromi is a virtuosic Japanese pianist who caught the attention of jazz legends Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea. When she was only 17, Chick Corea spotted her at Yamaha School of Music in Tokyo and the very next day, he ended his Tokyo Jazz Festival concert by having her come on stage to improvise with him on the piano.

Since her 2003 Telarc debut, Another Mind, which received the Recording Industry of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year award, Hiromi has electrified audiences and critics around the world. She possesses a creative energy that defies the conventional parameters of jazz and pushes musicianship and composition to unprecedented levels of complexity and sophistication.

Her award-winning streak continued with her critically acclaimed albums Brain, Spiral and Place to Be, cementing her reputation as an innovator in jazz, jazz fusion and post-bop. In 2011, Hiromi returns to the jazz trio format and released the album Voice together with Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips.

When asked about the inspiration for Voice, Hiromi said, "I called this album Voice because I believe that people’s real voices are expressed in their emotions. It’s not something that you really say. It’s more something that you have in your heart. It’s your true voice. Instrumental music is very similar. We don’t have any words or any lyrics to go with it. It’s the true voice that we don’t really put into words, but we feel it when it’s real."

Witness a jazz trio at the top of their game. Join Hiromi together with Anthony Jackson and Steve Smith for an emotional evening and find your voice.

Cock is fundamentally a love story, complicated by many players of different genders. It is a sensitive look at one man’s sexuality and the difficulties that arise when one realizes you have a choice. A play that focuses on the paralysing indecision that stems from not knowing who one really is.

Mouth & Foot Painting Artists Convention

The Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World (VDMFK) is an organization based out of Liechtenstein that supports artists who, due to disability or disease, cannot create their works of art with their hands, but with their mouths or feet.

Every year, works by the artists are exhibited in well known museums, galleries and public buildings throughout the world. The exhibition is a good platform for MFPA artists in Singapore to get international exposure.

In Singapore, the MFPA has done remarkable work in providing their artists a platform to showcase and sell their work. Many of the artists are happy to regularly demonstrate their special painting techniques at events and workshops. In this way, they hope to give others the same courage and to encourage greater public tolerance.

Supported by The Singapore Tourism Board, the exhibition is coming to Singapore and Southeast Asia for the first time, and more than 200 artists, family members, guests and delegates will be coming to Singapore to attend the event. About 200 pieces of artwork will be exhibited. It is a great opportunity to showcase Singapore as a vibrant and cosmopolitan artistic capital in the region.

It will also be the perfect balance of East meets West cultural interaction, with closed-door workshops conducted during the period of this Convention for artists from all over the world by art teachers and mentors based in Singapore.

Saturations - Selection of Indonesian Contemporary Photography Post-2000s

The hottest medium in art today–Photography–will take centre stage at Element Art Space this April with Saturations. Showcasing works from 9 of the most well-known contemporary Indonesian artists, this exhibition will be the first in Singapore to focus on Indonesian photography.

The line-up includes Angki Purbandono, Agan Harahap and Davy Linggar, each of who has enjoyed international success having won awards, acquired and exhibited in galleries, museums and biennales across the globe such as 3points Award, Center for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne, and La Triennale in Paris.

Indonesian contemporary art has never been the same since the 2000s with emerging creative culture/subcultures, alternative spaces, and ‘indie’ movements kickstarted by the generation born in the 1970s and 1980s. The change of politics also gave way to many varieties of creative expressions, and that included the development of photography in the visual arts.

In Saturations, Farah has selected what she considers as the best works from 9 artists who have always been working with photography (or based on the aesthetics of the photo as a medium) and whom she regards to have always challenged the common principles of photography. Or at least, they contest what the common audience (or photographers themselves) view as what is and what is not regarded as 'photography', treating and pushing the images beyond the myths of photography and the camera.
Singapore, 14th February 2012 – ‘SingaPlural’ – the inaugural Singapore Furniture Design Week held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore 2012/29th ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS 2012), Deco Asia and The Hospitality Show 2012 in March at the Singapore Expo, presents two new highlights - the ‘48 Hours Showroom Makeover Challenge’ and ‘30 Chairs LifeStories’. The two exhibits will demonstrate the past, present and future of furniture design in Singapore. High-end fashion retailer, Bonia has also come on board as the presenting sponsor for ‘SingaPlural’. Bonia will also put up an installation of style and elegance at Scape.

48 Hours Showroom Makeover Challenge

The first of its kind in Singapore, the ‘48 Hours Showroom Makeover Challenge’ is a competitive design project that aims to help our local retailers to draw consumers’ interest in buying furniture through creating exciting visual sensorial experience in their showrooms. This project – a collaborative effort between retailers and the design institutions, will see the participants race against time to recreate the existing retail showroom space within 48 hours.

Armed with a S$10,000 budget per team, the focal objective for each team is to design and create the best retail sensory experience for the assigned retail place, leveraging on the five human senses – sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.

A panel of jury consisting of international and local design professionals and media will judge the contest. The ‘48 Hours Showroom Makeover Challenge’ will be held at retail stores in Park Mall. The participating retailers and design institutions are LASALLE College of the Arts, who will be recreating the retail space in Xtra, NAFA to recreate Cellini Design, Inspiration Design School to AIR, Nanyang Polytechnic to Acanthus Collection and Temasek Polytechnic to Scanteak.

The makeover challenge will begin on 5th March to 6th March 2012. Results will be announced on 7th March 2012 and the winning team will walk away with cash prize of S$10,000!

30 Chairs LifeStories

As part of ‘SingaPlural’ – the inaugural Singapore Furniture Design Week, Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) has invited 30 multi-disciplinary creative representatives in Singapore to participate in ‘30 Chairs LifeStories’.

A piece of our iconic Singapore “Kopitiam” chair will be provided to them for their imaginative reinterpretation and expression of this archetypical object with a new meaning or dimension and even relates one’s life story. The objective is to let the designers create a conversational piece of design or art installation that express their vision which encapsulate the spirit of Singapore’s design community in finding new form of expression through this iconic “Kopitiam” chair.

Expect to see works from Asylum, the design team who has bagged home countless international design awards, and worked with names such as the Wanderlust Hotel, 54th Venice Biennale and En Haute Joaillerie. Kelvin Teo, the founder of Space Sense, and Oon, a Singapore based design company who constantly challenge themselves against traditional boundaries of design to bring forth a new generation of furniture design.

The chairs are proudly sponsored by Comfort Design and will be exhibited in SCAPE, Park Mall and Singapore Expo as one of the key highlights of the Design Trail from the 9th to 12th March 2012.

An Update! - Design *Scape

Another main highlight of ‘SingaPlural’ is Design *Scape, a concept which alters the conventional way of individual exhibition and transforms a congregated platform for local designers or talents to showcase their design artworks. This basically offers a great opportunity to see a group of companies in one convenient location where different brands will be on show from international, commercial and residential brands to emerging local labels.

Invading the spaces at Scape with their creative furniture designs are local designers Cilicon Faytory, Kelvin Teo and Oon as well as international Dutch designer, Pepe Heykoop, who is known for his ‘Skin Collection’ by Studio Pepe Heykoop.

An installation of style and elegance - ‘Birds of Affection’, by the presenting sponsor Bonia, uses the idea of a bird sanctuary to feature a massive nest where birds of paradise and affection fly and strut around in elegance and exquisiteness. “The bird sanctuary is a reflection of Bonia’s fine craftsmanship and style. We want to use this fine art to resonate the classic Italianism and modern day splendour of the true Bonia brand”, said Daniel Chiang, Director of Bonia.

An Update! - Design-Larger-Than-Life

The Design-Larger-Than-Life public installation brings together the understanding of environmental sustainability and producing works that speaks the ‘Green & Eco’ concepts.

The five teams exhibiting their installations outdoors are Creativeans, Out of Stock, Studio Norm, Studio Ju Ju and LASALLE at the ‘SingaPlural’.

Exhibitions of the Design-Larger-Than-Life will be from 6th to the 12th March 2012.
"I see how differently you treat me, hear it as well. I can
only smile because that doesn't hurt the throat, only strain
the face. Time. I thought that that is what it takes. Time
for things to heal. That if I keep quiet and wait things out.
The storm won't notice me and I can quietly coax the
songbird in me out of the branches to land on my throat
once again.
Wait. Me? Who? I scream and nothing comes out..."
{POIESIS} Play Poetry Slam™ is a one night-only ticketed event, hosted by Karen Tan, that plays up the performance element of a poetry slam, to increase accessibility and interest in the literary arts amongst young adults.

Young, budding poet-performers are selected through an open call to create original poetry pieces inspired by Neil Gaiman’s work, Mirrormask. A story about a girl in a circus who longs to run away and experience the ‘real’ world, it explores the blur between illusion and reality, escapism, and the power of imagination.

These poet-performers, who may perform individually, in pairs, or in groups of three, will draw on staging techniques such as dialogue and movement to enhance the reading. The 3-8 minute ‘mini poetry plays’ will be judged by random audience members and literary and performance experts, with the overall winner receiving mentorship and further performance opportunities with Word Forward.

As part of the i-AM Festival 2012 in conjunction with The LASALLE Show 2012, Project Ecclesia would like to present Poiesis, a poetry meets-theatre performance.
Esplanade Presents
Late Nite @ Esplanade
Heritage
Esplanade Recital Studio
13 January 2012, Fri 9.30pm
Experience the live magic of Heritage in a showcase of the band’s eclectic and experimental nature.
Heritage, formed in the early 1970s, is today considered one of the most unique and respected bands on the local music scene. This group has represented Singapore twice at international jazz festivals, headlined numerous blues and rock concerts here and overseas and even has its own television show on Channel 5 to boot. Often experimental in spirit, this eclectic unit is influenced by diverse musical styles - eastern and western - fusing them into its own unique and original sound!
Heritage was the first local band to release a self-produced album of 10 original compositions under the prestigious WEA label in 1979. Two more followed in 1993 and 1997, while a fourth is in the offing. During its colourful career, which spans more than three decades, the group has performed as far afield as Amsterdam, Holland and has been invited to perform at The Esplanade, Victoria Theatre and Suntec City Rock Auditorium here.
Heritage has held resident spots at popular clubs like Harry's Bar, The Crazy Elephant, The Saxophone, The Blue Note, Backstage, JJ Mahoney's and now performs at JJ Atlante, 39 Duxton Road.
Heritage will be performing an Anthology of originals from our previous albums, and some of our latest tunes. The material that we have chosen will represent not only Heritage's direction, but also highlight the band's eclectic nature. Our concerts often showcase our experimental side and elements of 'live theatre'.
We plan to record this concert and release it as a 'live' CD. Some original compositions that will be performed in this Late Nite includes Little Boy Lost, Together Again, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and The Legend of the Headless Horseman.
HERITAGE is Ashley Jansen (Electric Bass and vocals), Robert Seong Koon Wai Hee (Guitar), David McGuire (Drums), Atwell Jansen (Violin, Flutes, Harmonica, Vocals) and Sadeq (Electric Bass).
Tickets @ $25 , on sale 17 Nov 2011 from Esplanade Box Office and SISTIC’s authorised agents.
